RE: Tiffin not on NADA?

I'm looking at the NADA 'Gold Book': Allegro Phaeton,M40QSH. Your MSRP appears too high; it doesn't jive with the 'Book' for purposes of establishing Today's value. TOM

RE: Next ? - Old Prevost or younger 'mass-production' rig??

CCXNOLA, Hello again, I think you got good info here, and Crazy as it seems, $75K WILL get you a late 90's 40footer from the Mid/High End makers' nicer models. But maybe NO SLIDE. (That's the killer) Think 98 Country Coach Magna...or 99Monaco Exec..HR Navigator or?? Then you get newer-style big engines, appliances, interior and it's not wore out. And you know another thing (you've owned MH's before); they ALL get parked in the trees eventually, so she'll be hard to sell again if No slide. DO THIS: Subscribe to NADA Recreation Vehicle Appraisal Guide Ph#1(800)966-6232. You'll see. I was a $$Cash buyer and looked at 20, Bought 1. TOM

RE: Really Need Info re Detroit Diesel 8V92TA

I was So-ooo close to buying a 91 Prevost w/no-slideout $$cheap$$. Deal killer was No slide-out;I'm married. It was 'plain' inside compared to newer conversions since late 90's so we have what we wanted. Us Prevost 'wannabe's' save on chrome polish however. Tough call...older Prevost vs. Newer fiberglass. I love the new style 450hpCummins, the wife likes the Aqua-Hot and slide-out. Everybody's $$ and likes are different. TOM

RE: Really Need Info re Detroit Diesel 8V92TA

They were A-OK in their day. Lot's of moving parts in em'. EPA emmisions etc. moved everything to In-line 6cylinder, very few V-8's on the road now. Let's say it has Documented Overhaul paperwork and you buy it cheap...who's to care but you. The oil use/leak stories get exaggerated, but poor mpg stories were pretty typical. QUESTION:So what's the Motorhome.. A Bluebird?... Prevost? TOM

RE: Monaco Air Brakes Alarm

Burghere, How much does the green needle drop in say, 1/2hour? Or overnight when shut down. Can you here a 'psttt' back at the compressor/dryer when guage hits 120psi. and quits building higher? Yes, an air compressor cut-out can fail and keep pumping air and prematurely wear out the unit. If you 'Log-in' to MCOA, our Monaco Coach Owners Assoc. Web-site you'll get some great 'Been there..done that' help. 99Exec. TOM

RE: Do we really need slide topper canvas?

I agree on the 'ugly'..but my rubber seal actually DID loosen from the sidewall. In a wind-driven rainstrom that would have let lots of water into the motorhome if I didn't have the slide's 'canvas'. But then mine serves as a sunshade as well..important to me. TOM

RE: Cat 3208.....Whats your opinion?????

That CAT/ALLISON setup is quite common. Lots of re-man units and parts. IF it does finally go....and they all do...that's a bonus. They aren't a great overhaul candidate and if it's a turbo'd 3208T it been pushed harder. But nuthin' generically wrong with them over the years. TOM

RE: Aqua-Hot

Yes, we have Aqua-Hot. Nice but touchy/finicky. New ones are now computerized and more fool-proof than ours. Your BEST move would be to go to this Yahoo Web-site: HydronicRVHeating moderated by a Aqua-Hot guru Roger Berke. Excellent Web-page for all your questions and concerns. I would have been lost without it's info. Q: Do you get BusConversions magazine? Sounds like you are in for big-time project and $$$. TOM

RE: going to K.C. next weekend, need cold weather advice

Georgesallee...Depends on if you are stopping and shutting everything off overnight or immediately plugging into shorepower and keeping the heat on. The weakest link is usually the inlet for adding fresh water and the gardenhose itself. A slightly open baydoor will lose huge amts of heat if breezy. TOM

RE: Hydro Hot or Not?? ISL 400?

You will like the Hydro-Hot/Aqua-Hot if you don't mind the fiddling and adjusting that some people don't like one bit. And don't fall in love with one coach..there's literally thousands out there that will fit in your garage. Drive 10, then buy 1. Cash$$ really, really counts nowadays for bargains. TOM

RE: Air Brake/Suspension Leak

Do you have an 'air valve' to retract the steps? Or as others suggest..the airleveler adjustment valve near that area? (I had both leak.) No biggie if your Main Duplex Air PressureGuage shows normal...and yes the 'Soapy water' spray helps find em'. TOM

RE: Plastic Drawer / Door latches Monaco uses!!!!

sepislibb. You are NOT alone. Us Monacoers have those latches as a #1 'Worst Irritant' I tried 3 that either wouldn't fit or too flimsy. For the 'Biggies' at floor level with heavy books and china I fashioned an oak 1x1x3 for a 'twist to hold shut' much like on a barn door! Hey, it works...and no moving parts. Nobody has a perfect answer it seems. TOM

RE: Question for the DIY mechanic

I use a 20 TON Lo-Profile bottle jack. It won't lift very high...but that's the point, it gets UNDER stuff. But 2 x 12 planks is your safest.TOM

RE: 36' or 40'

Going down the road...25 feet would be enough for 2. When parked..a 36' with slides extended would have MORE room than a no-slide 45' of olden days. Then you could get to 'No-name Lake' without cutting tree limbs down or scraping boulders. But you gotta think Price/Re-sale value too. TOM

RE: How cold can it be before I HAVE to winterize?

ZSR22, 28F or so. If you do NOT open the bay doors it will be quite a bit warmer in there than outside. A 100Watt lightbulb really helps keep temps up...just don't catch anything on fire. Unhook the garden hose. TOM

RE: 36' or 40'

A VERY good point. I barely squeak into some spots with our 40'(actually 41'10") My dream would to have a $$higher-end$$ 3-slide 36' with a tag-axle and 400+ hp. Don't exist..why I don't know. TOM

RE: Going "camping" - pull a TOAD or rent a car locally?

Dolly's are falling out of favor big-time it seems. Absolutely can NOT back them up. 4-wheels down is faster to unhook, but needs Tow-bar and front bumper 'Baseplate'$$$. (Rental gives you go-anywhere and eliminates the backing up issue.) No real right or wrong...just different. TOM

RE: Adding a Slideout to an Older Motorhome

Bus Conversions Magazine at www.gobusing.com might be a good start. Or PREMIER Coach in Santa Ana or B&B Coach in Vegas. Plan on a MAJOR ceiling&cabinet tear-out too account wiring and altering steel/aluminum 'cage'. Methinks rarely done on anything but Prevost/MCI/Eagle etc...but $$$ talks. TOM

RE: ULSD = poor mileage

ULSD: I'd say no difference after 20,000 miles. #2Diesel vs #1 is the biggie. #1 won't gel up in Northcountry but will usually lower mpg from 8.2 to 6.9mpg for our 450hp engine TOM
